How to Get to Hallstatt from Salzburg and Vienna

Train, bus, car or tour — real travel times, the ferry across the lake, and the last departures to plan around.

Hallstatt looks close to everything on a map, but it isn't the easiest place to reach. There is no direct train, the station sits across the lake from the village, and the last connections back leave earlier than most people expect. Once you know how the pieces fit together, though, it's an easy trip from both Salzburg and Vienna.

Here's how each route works, how long it really takes, and what to plan around.

The Short Answer: Which Route to Choose

From Salzburg, most independent travelers either take the train with a change at Attnang-Puchheim, or Bus 150 to Bad Ischl and then onward by train or bus. From Vienna, the train is the practical public option, but it is a long day trip. If you have luggage, a group, or limited time, a private transfer is the simplest choice.

Bus 150 + train/busAbout 2h15 via Bad IschlNot practicalCheapest, fewer train changes
Private car or transferAbout 1.5h door to doorLong drive, best split with a stopGroups, luggage, short on time

Journey times vary by connection, and different timetable sources quote slightly different totals, so treat these as ranges and check ÖBB or the local bus timetable for your exact date.

From Salzburg to Hallstatt by Train

There is no direct train. You travel on an ÖBB train to Attnang-Puchheim, change there to the regional Salzkammergut line toward Hallstatt, and get off at Hallstatt station. Trains run roughly hourly, and the total is usually somewhere between about two and a quarter and three hours depending on the connection. A regional train on the first leg often adds only a few minutes compared with a faster one, so don't pay extra just for speed.

The ferry across the lake

This is the part first-timers miss. The station is on the opposite shore, so you walk to the dock and take a short ferry across to the village (Hallstatt Markt). It's part of the experience, and the approach by water is one of the best views of the village you'll get.

From Salzburg to Hallstatt by Bus 150

Bus 150 runs from outside Salzburg Hauptbahnhof to Bad Ischl, taking roughly 90 minutes and passing the Wolfgangsee on the way. From Bad Ischl you continue to Hallstatt by train, or by regional bus with a change at Gosaumühle. In total it comes out at around two hours fifteen minutes, and it avoids the Attnang-Puchheim transfer.

For the trip home, the train via Attnang-Puchheim is often the better choice, because bus and train times back don't always line up well.

From Vienna to Hallstatt: Is It Worth It?

The usual route is a Railjet from Wien Hauptbahnhof to Attnang-Puchheim, which takes a little under two hours, then the same regional train and ferry as above. Door to door it's about three and a half to four hours each way.

That makes a same-day return possible but tiring, and the last easy connection back leaves just after 18:00. If you can, stay a night. If you can't, consider going via Salzburg or booking a private transfer for part of the trip.

By Car, Transfer or Guided Tour

A private car or transfer from Salzburg takes about an hour and a half and is the only truly direct option, which is why it suits families, groups and anyone with luggage. Be aware that Hallstatt limits traffic in the village itself, so a driver will usually drop you at the edge of the center. Guided day tours from Salzburg are the most hands-off option, but they run on a fixed schedule and put you in the village with everyone else at peak hours.

Practical Tips for a Smooth Trip

Worth Knowing Before You Go

  • Go early. a roughly 8am departure from Salzburg gets you to Hallstatt before the tour-bus crowds, which are heaviest from late morning into the afternoon.
  • Know your last ferry and bus. one timetable checked in August 2026 showed the last ferry from Hallstatt Markt to the station at 18:15 and the last bus from Bad Ischl station toward Hallstatt at 18:16. Verify the day you travel.
  • Leave luggage in Salzburg. Hallstatt station has no luggage storage, while Salzburg Hauptbahnhof has lockers.
  • Book the return, not just the outbound. evening connections thin out quickly, and the last easy train toward Vienna leaves just after 18:00.
  • Staying overnight beats rushing. you get the village after the crowds leave, and a morning for the trails in our beginner hiking guide.

The journey is half the charm — just plan the ferry and the last connection.
